* Corresponding author. Abstract – Caused by the importance of urban vegetation volume as an indicator for ecologically orientated city planning and since there are several cities which already use laser scanner data at leaf-off aerial flight times for creating 3D city models the idea merges of using this data for that purpose. This paper deals with the question whether laser scanner data that has not been taken during the vegetation period allows a determination of vegetation volume with sufficient accuracy. The work sets up on previous results where laser scanner data has been compared to photogrammetrically determined vegetation height measurements. Starting from the existence of different response characteristics within various vegetation types the ratio of point density of classified non-ground points is detailed analysed, and might be used as a parameter for a point density controlled reconstruction of the laser response within the vegetation stock. Attempts of reconstruction are demonstrated.

Uav-based Photogrammetric Point Clouds - Tree Stem Mapping in Open Stands in Comparison to Terrestrial Laser Scanner Point Clouds

In both ecology and forestry, there is a high demand for structural information of forest stands. Forest structures, due to their heterogeneity and density, are often difficult to assess. Hence, a variety of technologies are being applied to account for this ”difficult to come by” information. Common techniques are aerial images or groundand airborne-Lidar. In the present study we evaluate the ...

Registration of Airborne Laser Data with One Aerial Image

At present, the calibration of airborne laser scanner data relies on the estimation of the position and attitude of the aircraft during the acquisition using GPS and INS systems, but also on the estimation of some other parameters: time bias, scan angle offset, etc, which usually requires the acquisition of extra data over known features: along and across the airport runway, over an horizontal ...

Autonomous Exploration in Unknown Urban Environments for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

In this paper, we present an autonomous exploration method for unmanned aerial vehicles in unknown urban environment. We address two major aspects of explorationmap building and obstacle avoidanceby combining model predictive control (MPC) with a local obstacle map builder. An onboard laser scanner is used to build the online map of obstacles around the vehicle during the flight. A real-time MP...

A novel method for locating the local terrestrial laser scans in a global aerial point cloud

In addition to the heterogeneity of aerial and terrestrial views, the small scale terrestrial point clouds are hardly comparable with large scale and overhead aerial point clouds. A hierarchical method is proposed for automatic locating of terrestrial scans in aerial point cloud. The proposed method begins with detecting the candidate positions for the deployment of the terrestrial laser scanne...
